BLACK SWAN, starring Golden Globe winner Natalie Portman, has achieved Fox Searchlight’s biggest UK & Ireland box office opening weekend of all time with £2.76 million in 356 cinemas across the country. This is ahead of hit Searchlight movies JUNO (£2 million) and THE FULL MONTY (£1.59 million). The critically acclaimed film, nominated for 12 BAFTAs including Best Film, Best Director for Darren Aronofsky and Best Actress for Natalie Portman, will expand its release to another 75 cinemas from Friday.
Cameron Saunders, Managing Director of Twentieth Century Fox UK Theatrical, commented:
“Black Swan’s opening weekend clearly demonstrates the appetite of the cinema-going public for bold, creative and visionary filmmaking. I believe the carefully orchestrated marketing campaign captured the spirit and energy of the film; and just like Mila Kunis’ character in the movie the marketing was never ‘faking it’. We’re delighted to have helped make the opening of this extraordinary movie into such a highly anticipated movie event.”
A psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, BLACK SWAN stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company (Mila Kunis). A Fox Searchlight Pictures release by visionary director Darren Aronofsky (THE WRESTLER), BLACK SWAN takes a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the Swan Queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect.
