With
bloody-disgusting.com revealing some apparent storylines for the rumoured Ghostbusters 3 including Dana Barrett's (Sigourney Weaver) child Oscar is actually the son of Peter Venkman, who of course is played by comic genius Bill Murray.
Could this plot twist be the hook that finally lands the elusive Bill Murray, who has constantly dismissed talk of GB3 as his "nightmare"?
If GB3 is ever to be made then surely Oscar would have a part to play? With GB2 being released way back in 1989 and the child believed to be around 8 months old, we can assume that a 21st century Oscar would be around 21 years old.
So here is Pearl & Dean's shortlist for who could be cast as Oscar:
A real outsider to start off our list is Anton Yelchin, better known for his roles Pavel Chekov in Star Trek and Kyle Reese in Terminator Salvation. Certainly has the talent to pull off a role like this and is exactly the right age to make Oscar believable. Has had experience in comedies such as being the leading teen in Charlie Bartlett. Perhaps a little too unfamiliar?
Ok, ok I know what you’re thinking, Zac Efron to star as Oscar in Ghostbusters 3, "over my dead body"! Well before you shoot me down, let's think about this from a Studio stand point. Zac has legions of fans around the globe and just the mention of his name sends young girls into a love struck mess. It would certainly bring a new generation of fans to the franchise, but perhaps for the wrong reasons?
The first of our Superbad trio included in this list, is Jonah Hill. Perhaps edging towards the upper age bracket for what director Ivan Reitman could make believable for Oscar. Jonah is now an experienced comedy actor, with four major movies under his belt in 2010 already. Everyone will have their own idea on what Oscar would look like in this day and age. So would Jonah match up to many people's visual expectations?
Christopher Mintz-Plasse, also known as "McLovin" and "Red Mist" for his roles in Superbad and Kick-Ass. Christopher is another great young comedy actor and would be the right age to play Oscar. But one can't help but think Oscar would perhaps be the wrong role for him in Ghostbusters 3. If anything, he would be the perfect man to play the love child of Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) and Janine Melnitz (Annie Potts). That's just a plot line waiting to happen!
In my mind, all roads to who should be cast as Oscar lead to Michael Cera. His deadpan comedic delivery has whiffs of a Mr Murray himself and his trade mark bleak experssion is perfect for the mind of a young boy who was kidnapped and possessed by an evil painting known as Vigo the Carpathian! Though before you get all exicited about Cera taking the part, he recently came out and said "
Ghostbusters is the most influential movie of my childhood," "
And I would not want to be the reason that Ghostbusters was all of a sudden bad." -
