TO INFINITY AND BEYOND AS ‘TOY STORY 3’ IS #1 AND DISNEY.PIXAR’S BIGGEST EVER OPENING WEEKEND AT US BOX OFFICE
‘Toy Story 3’ has smashed records with its out of this world $109 million opening weekend at the US Box office beating Disney.Pixar’s previous record of $70.5 for ‘The Incredibles’. It is also the biggest June opening in industry history and the second biggest opening for an animated film ever in US.
It’s fifteen years since Woody and Buzz first hit the big screen in the world’s first full-length CGI feature film, which changed the way we interact with cinema and revolutionised animation. Four years later ‘Toy Story 2’ enraptured audiences and confirmed Woody and Buzz as the world’s favourite toys. Eleven years on the toys are back out of the toy box, this time in Disney Digital 3D. As US audiences flocked to the cinema this weekend, the film’s broad, enduring and timeless appeal was confirmed with 40% of the non-family audience being young adults, aged 17 – 24, who grew up with the ‘Toy Story’ characters which first appeared 15 years ago.
"The 'Toy Story' films are the heart and soul of Pixar. These characters are like family and so we could not be more proud of the response to 'Toy Story 3' this weekend. We are thrilled that fans – old and new – continue to embrace and love these characters as much as we do. We look forward to sharing this film with moviegoers all over the world throughout the summer."- Darla K. Anderson, Producer of "Toy Story 3"
‘Toy Story 3’ has been universally praised by the critics and received a 99% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
‘Masterpiece’. ‘Toy Story 3 enthrals, enchants, and makes you laugh and gasp and weep’. – Robbie Collin, News of the World.
‘Toy Story 3 represents a resounding hat trick’. ‘This film works flawlessly, offering thrills and pathos, familiarity and closure.’ – Wendy Ide, The Times.
All 11 Pixar titles have debuted in the #1 position on opening weekends of wide release
• ‘Toy Story 3’ is Disney/Pixar’s first $100M opening.
• ‘Toy Story 3’ is Disney’s 4th highest opening weekend at the domestic box office behind Pirates: At World’s End - $139.8; Pirates: Dead Man’s Chest - $135.6 and Alice in Wonderland - $116.1.
The creators of the beloved “Toy Story” films re-open the toy box and bring moviegoers back to the delightful world of our favourite gang of toy characters in ‘Toy Story 3’. As Andy prepares to depart for college, Buzz, Woody and the rest of his loyal toys are troubled about their uncertain future. Directed by Lee Unkrich (co-director of “Toy Story 2” and “Finding Nemo”), ‘Toy Story 3’ is a comical new adventure in Disney Digital 3D™ that lands the toys in a room full untamed tots who can’t wait to get their sticky little fingers on these “new” toys. It’s pandemonium as they try to stay together, ensuring “no toy gets left behind.” Meanwhile, Barbie comes face to plastic face with Ken (yes, that Ken). Pixar veteran Darla K. Anderson ("Cars," "Monsters, Inc.") produces, while Michael Arndt, Academy Award®-winning screenwriter of “Little Miss Sunshine,” brings his unique talents and comedic sensibilities.
‘Toy Story 3’ is in UK cinemas in Disney Digital 3D and 2D from the start of the school holidays on Monday July 19.
